Big Issues... Tiny Solutions!

Oral appliances are an effective and comfortable choice.

Image

Diverse

A tiny mouthpiece has the power of improving your sleep and energy. There are different appliances available but they can´t be "one size fits all" because they must be custom fit for every person. Choosing the ideal design will depend on several factors such as the total amount of teeth, the shape and/or size of palate and jawbone, the age of the patient, among other factors.

Adaptable

To ensure effectiveness and comfort every oral appliance must be a custom-made device using models of your own teeth so it can fit perfectly into your mouth. Appliance will be adjusted by moving the jaw forward in small increments while keeping your airways open until symptoms of snoring and obstructive sleep apnea are improved.

Customized

Starting from a model with the dimensions of every patient make it possible to create the most effective and comfortable devices. A custom appliance is the best way to assure proper fit while creating a thin but durable appliance that can last you several years. To find the most functional design is key to succeed on this treatment of dental sleep medicine..

Frequently Asked Questions

Some answers to your doubts...

What is sleep apnea and what it does?

It is a sleep disorder in which breathing continuously stops and starts again. Obstructive sleep apnea is the most common type of apnea.

In this form, the airway collapses, cutting off airflow to the lungs and to the rest of the body. About 22 million Americans suffer from sleep apnea, and 80% go undiagnosed.

Consequences of OSA:

  • Difficulty concentrating on tasks such as driving
  • Excessive daytime sleepiness
  • Morning and daytime headaches
  • Generalized irritability
  • Impaired emotional functioning
  • Sleep disordered breathing in childhood may be instrumental in delaying or damaging cognitive development

Why is sleep apnea harmful?

As obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) develops, it has cumulative effect. This means that the longer the disease goes untreated, the greater the negative side effects and associated health risks.

If sleep apnea remains untreated, other health conditions may emerge or current health problems may heighten, including:

  • High blood preassure
  • Heart disease (attack, failure)
  • Stroke
  • Diabetes (regular and gestational)
  • Depression
  • Reflux (GERD)
  • Atherosclerosis
  • Sexual dysfunction

Why is snoring different than apnea?

A partial airway obstruction causes the upper airway tissues to vibrate and produce the snoring… In the case of sleep apnea you stop breathing for seconds up to hundreds of times per night with a total obstructed airway.

How this oral therapy works?

A small and comfortable custom-made oral device worn only during sleep, maintains an unobstructed open airway by supporting the jaw and tongue in a forward position making it possible for you to breathe while you sleep.

How about diagnosis and treatment?

First, your health provider must know and evaluate your symptoms or even prescribe some sleep testing to diagnose your sleep apnea.

Once confirmed, there are several treatments available. CPAP machine is the most common. It pulls in room air, compresses it and blows it into a tube attached to a mask worn by the patient.

While CPAP is the most common option, other modalities of treatments do exist including positional therapy, weight loss, and even surgical procedures.

But there is a most convenient treatment… Oral appliances. Custom-fitted and easy to use (especially for those who change positions during sleep) fits into your mouth and also into your lifestyle.

Research shows that oral appliance therapy is an effective alternative to CPAP. When patients consistently wear their oral appliance, they wake up each morning feeling refreshed.

Why to get the best treatment?

Treating snoring or sleep apnea with the adequate treatment is all benefits.

Not only to recover a healthy sleep pattern… But also to have a treatment that easily integrates into a healthy life routine. The cure doesn´t have to be worse.

The point of treating sleep apnea is to sleep better and also to reduce risks of suffering from its side effects and health issues.

If the selected treatment option doesn’t fit into your lifestyle or it complicates and interrupts your sleep, it is not the ideal option.

That is why, when it comes to choosing a therapy it is important to have that in mind, and not only the quality-price relation.

For that and other benefits to sleep, health and lifestyle… Oral devices are gaining popularity given their simplicity and effectiveness.
